Tip: Refreshing Excel Pivot Tables With CaseDetective
You already know that CaseDetective for FogBugz is the easiest way to extract your valuable data from your FogBugz database, but how do you refresh an Excel Pivot table with that data without continually re-creating your spreadsheet? Here I'll briefly show you how to quickly update an existing Excel spreadsheet with data from CaseDetective.
First of all, lets create a simple Excel spreadsheet from CaseDetective data...

In the Report Options window make sure the "Include headers" and "Add column for pivot table counts" options are selected, but not the "Add date to default file name" option, and click OK.

Once the CSV (or TXT) file is saved you need to import it into Excel. This is important, as simply opening the file in Excel will not give you the ability to easily "refresh" the data.

In the Data Import Wizard, simply navigate to your CSV file and open it, you do not need to create a new "data source".

After stepping through the usual delimited file import wizard, your data will be in the Excel spreadsheet, and the External Data toolbar will be available.

Now it's time to create the Pivot Table. In the first step of the Pivot Table wizard, keep the default of "Microsoft Office Excel list or database" as to where the data is coming from.

And then select all the data and headers from the worksheet that you imported your FogBugz data into.

After a couple more clicks and dragging your desired fields into the pivot table you should have your pivot table. In the example below I've simply dragged the Area and Count fields into the left most column and main central area respectively.
You should now save your spreadsheet.

For this test I've added one new case to the database, and given it an Area different to the previous ones (Miscellaneous).

After using the Reload button in CaseDetective I create the same report again and overwrite the previous file.

Back in the Excel spreadsheet, simply using the Refresh Data button in the "External Data" toolbar retrieves the new data and therefore case.

Switching to the pivot table sheet and refreshing it's data will bring the new case's data into your pivot table.

Hope that helps you see how easy it is with CaseDetective to refresh data in your stock reports that you may need to produce on a regular basis from FogBugz.
Regards,
Ian M. Jones
